A typical morning
“It’s time to go! Get in the van!”
10 minutes later….. After 2 lost shoes, 1 meltdown, and a last minute potty break, we all made it into the vehicle. As the doors opened, I could hear the clinking and crashing of trash falling onto the garage floor.
“Hurry and jump in!”
The kids climb over clothes, blankets, toys, fast food wrappers, and probably a family of mice for all I know. (If I were a mouse, I’d want to live in our van.)
“Seatbelts, please!”
As we all buckle up (after being asked 4 more times) and head down the road, nobody but me seems fazed by the mess we find ourselves in. Instead, they’re finding long lost treasures……
confession
I clean our van periodically. I mean, when it gets so bad that I can hardly stand it or something embarrassing happens.
I remember dropping the kids off in the school line and as they opened the door, the wind caught some papers and wrappers as they wooshed outside. I yelled out the window for them to chase everything down!
As they rushed around, trying to grab everything, my face flushed as I figured everyone ahead and behind me was watching the spectacle that was my van. They finally threw it all back in, closed the door, and walked into the school.
I pulled away, determined to make time to clean our van.
Am I alone?
Have you ever felt like your inside mess was leaking out? The junk that has been piling up is about to woosh out of you?
There’s a way to clean it all up and we don’t even have to pick up a sponge.
Dwell on that verse for a bit.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
Breathe it in.
Allow God’s peace to replace your chaos.
It’s not worth holding on to.
There’s no treasure in it.
God wants to take our chaos and replace it with his yoke (which is much lighter).
Accept it.
Carry it.
Don’t let useless garbage take up any more of your brain space.
Forgiveness
Forgive those who’ve wronged you. Love those who hurt you. This life is too short to spend our days dwelling in a pile of junk. I like to say “It’s not the Kingdom” when I’m dealing with difficult things.
If the situation doesn’t affect my eternal life, it’s not worth holding on to.
“It’s not the Kingdom.”
Give it to God, take a deep breath, and live freely in Him. Rest your soul.
