It’s a Martha World
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to go to Africa on a missions trip. It was life-changing for me. I truly got to see how unbelievably blessed I really am.
When I returned home, it was difficult to get back into the fast pace of this life.
Why are we so busy?
Everyone is busy, busy, busy. But in all honesty, we aren’t really doing anything.
If I think about a typical day for myself, it’s filled with time wasters. Sure, there are some pretty important, mandatory things that I do such as homeschooling and taking care of the home, belongings, and family I’ve been blessed with, but a lot of my “free time” is wasted.
There’s cell phone usage, scrolling social media, and watching Netflix among many other things.
Making time for reading my Bible was not a priority.
Becoming Mary
Reading through the story of Mary and Martha reveals a lot. Both women are doing important things. But Jesus chooses one act to be more important than the other.
“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. but Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42
Serving matters
Martha was doing good. She was serving Jesus and all those in her home. As she hustled and bustled around her house, cooking and cleaning, she started getting angry.
I can just see her staring daggers into the back of Mary’s head, stewing and getting frustrated.
Finally, she’s had enough and approaches Jesus. Surely he will set her sister straight.
But he doesn’t. Instead, he calmly points out to Martha that she has become distracted in her serving.
Relationship with Him is most important
Jesus has given us permission to step outside of our chores to join him in the living room.
We can rest at his feet.
How? Open up your Bible and dwell a bit on his teachings. THAT is what is important. Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Being a Martha isn’t bad. Serving, taking care of your family, caring for those in your home, cooking and cleaning: these are all good things. It’s just not the most important thing.
So, be a Mary. Allow your Martha side to take a break and sit at his feet.
Dwelling led to journaling
When I discovered Bible journaling, my passion for Bible reading ignited! I became excited to dwell in the passages.
Journaling one chapter at a time helped me not become overwhelmed or bored. I can focus because I’m reading small sections and I’m looking for verses that stick out to me.
