Hearing from God
Our Church recently decided to turn our auditorium into a prayer room a couple of times a week. There is worship music playing and an opportunity to come in and just seek God.
No interruptions.
No “mom, mommy, mama”.
No cell phones.
No television.
Just people intentionally seeking God in an environment specially catered to do just that.
I found myself in the prayer room Tuesday night seeking out God’s voice on a situation in my life. I had been consistently praying leading up to Tuesday, but the environment allowed me to sit in quiet with no distractions.
What you hide is what you hear
A few days before, I felt strongly that God was asking me to be still and to wait- something it seems I hear a lot. Patience is something I’m always being stretched in.
I thought He also said, “Good things come to those who wait”, which gave me a boost of something. It wasn’t necessarily a good thing. More of a feeling of “I’m doing the better thing by waiting and it will be rewarded.” But I felt good about it.
See, there was a verse God was trying to relay to me but I didn’t have it hidden away in my heart or mind, so He had to re-route me to find it.
God speaks through His Word but if we don’t read it, apply it, and retain it, He can’t use it.
I wanted to journal in my Bible “Good things come to those who wait” so I looked it up in my Bible app- but it’s not there. Turns out it’s a quote from an English poet named Lady Mary Montgomerie Currie, not God. It was also a slogan for Heinz Ketchup. ha

Through this process, God led me to Lamentations 3:22-26
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.””
I knew the first part but the second part was what God wanted me to hear and learn.
“The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.”
Wait quietly.
Shoot.
That’s a lot different than what I thought I heard before.
This deflated my puffed chest and humbled me. I wasn’t doing a good job of waiting quietly. In fact, I had talked the situation to death.
Coming at it from multiple angles.
Complaining.
Assuming.
Verbalizing my anger, fears, frustrations.
Basically doing everything except being quiet. The first quote just says to wait- not specifying how to do that.
God brings peace.
No peace comes from venting.
But the peace didn’t come from being quiet either.
What?
If you’re quiet and just storing up all your negative thoughts inside, that does nothing for peace. You’re completely at odds with your inner-self.
Nope. The peace came from totally and completely handing over everything to God. When that happened, the quiet was easy. It happened naturally. Because with God handling the fear, anger, and frustrations, there was nothing left to say.
And I’m sure I’ll have to daily continue to hand things over to Him. Because we all know that every day has it’s own new set of challenges, but Praise God, His mercies are new every morning.

I wanted the picture to reflect and focus on the QUIET part of the verse. To remember that it’s not just about the waiting. It’s about how I wait.
